Revised Design for the Freedom Tower


NEW YORK, June 29, 2005 – Governor George E. Pataki, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, World Trade Center developer Larry A. Silverstein and architect David Childs today released the revised design for the Freedom Tower. OPAL Awards Dinner 2005
WSP Cantor Seinuk was presented two awards at the ASCE Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) gala on April 13th held at the Sheraton Hotel in Vienna, Virginia. Dr Ahmad Rahimian, President, received the Civil Engineering Research Foundation’s (CERF) Charles Pankow Award for Innovation for the Torre Mayor tower in Mexico City, and also picked up an Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award of Merit, on behalf of WSP Cantor Seinuk for the Time Warner Center in New York. . . . El ingeniero y arquitecto cubano de origen judío Israel Seinuk murió en Nueva York el pasado 14 de septiembre, pero su muerte no ha trascendido hasta la pasada semana. Nació en La Habana el 21 de diciembre de 1931, y su primer trabajo estuvo ligado a la constructora española Focsa.
Tras graduarse en 1954 en ingeniería en la Universidad de La Habana, su primer encargo importante fue participar en el equipo que construyó el edificio Focsa en el barrio de El Vedado, en La Habana, junto al ingeniero Luis Sáenz y al arquitecto Gómez Sampera. El Focsa, inaugurado en 1956, tiene 121 metros de altura y 33 pisos y en su tiempo fue un hallazgo no solo por su novedoso alzado de hormigón vertical, sino por su concepto, pues albergaba más de 350 apartamentos, aparcamiento para 500 coches, estudios de radio y televisión, teatros, centro comercial, restaurantes y otros servicios.Tras la llegada de Castro al poder, en 1960 Ysrael Seinuk emigró a Estados Unidos con solo 20 dólares en el bolsillo y su inseparable regleta de cálculo, como él mismo gustaba de rememorar. Con los años y su demostrada valía, llegaría a ser profesor universitario y a colaborar con los arquitectos de rascacielos más importantes del mundo, entre ellos Philip Johnson y Norman Foster.Entre las edificaciones altas que lideró constructivamente están el llamado Lápiz Labial (Johnson), el Centro Time Warner, el Trump World Tower y la Torre Hearst (Foster, actualmente en construcción). Entre sus obras más alabadas están el edificio de 4 Times Square y el Museum of the Jewish Heritage. Remodeló la Estación Central de Nueva York y dirigió el levantamiento de la torre 0-14 de Dubai, otra obra singular y compleja.
Considerado una autoridad mundial en la tecnología de los edificios de altura y en el tratamiento del acero y el hormigón, en muchos aspectos profesionales fue un visionario. Desde 1977 tenía su propia compañía y en 2005 la revista Time le consideró uno de los 25 hispanos más influyentes de EE UU, además del único invitado por Reino Unido a participar en la elaboración de los estándares para el diseño de rascacielos en la UE tras el 11 de septiembre. Una de sus últimas obras es la nueva Ópera de Miami. Seinuk nunca olvidó sus orígenes y ayudó a multitud de cubanos que se enfrentaban al exilio. En una entrevista de 2005 dijo: "Asumiendo que las cosas volvieran a un ritmo normal, democrático, yo iría a Cuba aunque fuera a construir una chocita".
